Father Joseph Marchetti

Father Joseph Marchetti, co-founder of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Saint Charles Borromeo – Scalabrinians, was born on the 3rd of October of 1869 in Lombrici de Camaiore, Italy. After completing his theological studies, Marchetti was ordained a priest in 1892. Soon he was involved with the suffering of the Italian immigrants as half of his parishioners had left for Brazil. He took on the commitment to accompany them to the Geneva Port.

This first contact with the migration reality summed up his missionary vocation and the meeting with John Baptist Scalabrini transformed Fr. Marchetti into an “external missionary” of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Saint Charles.

This is how the Christopher Colombus Orphanage came about, in the city of Sao Paulo. Fruit of the faith and of the courage of the one who gave his life in favor of the most disfavored.

Wherever the emigrants, the poor and the sick where, there was Fr. Marchetti to take car of them, with the comfort of faith, the vigor of hope and enthusiasm for life. He took care of the material, human, social and espiritual aspects of the migrants and other marginalized persons ofhis time. Fr. Marchetti came down with tiphoid fever when he was 27 years old and died on December 14, 1896.

The founder John Baptist Scalabrini said about the life of Father Marchetti, “He lived an irrepreensival life as the son of God among the most needy migrants and was a messanger of The Word. His life was not in vain: he lost it in sacrifice and service to Jesus Christ identified in the migrant(cf. Phil. 1, 1-17).

The process for the canonization for Fr. Joseph Marchetti is on going since 1996, the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his death.
