Mother
Assunta Marchetti
Mother Assunta Marcehtti was born in Lombrici de Camaiore, Italy, on August 15,
1871. From her childhood, she longed for a live of total dedication and giving
herself to God. However, the domestic chores, a sick mother and the premature
death of her father impeded the immediate realization of her desires. In 1895,
she decided to accept the request of her brother,
Fr. Joseph Marchetti,
to follow him in his mission in Brazil to care for the orphans of the Italian
immigrants.
She
accepted the call and, together with her mother and two other young women, was
presented to John
Baptist Scalabrini, constituting, as such, the “Servants of Orphans and the
Abandoned”. It was the 25th of October, 1895.
For Mother Assunta, Jesus was present in the poor, the orphans, the sick and the
migrants. She felt happy and “honored to be called to the apostolate”, to the
service of charity for the less favored. She dedicated her youth to the little
ones, being mother to those who had lost their mother, leaving them orphans.
She desired, in her heart, to finish her earthly days together with her
favorites, the little orphans.
The
Scalabrinian Missionaries have in Mother Assunta an untiring missionary and
courageous model dedicated to the service of charity. A serious wound to her
leg caused during the care of a sick person was the origen of suffering during
many years. She died in the Sao Paulo Orphanage, Brazil, on the first day of
July of 1948. The diocesan process for the Beatification of Mother Assunta
Marchetti was concluded on the 25th of October of 1991, in Sao Paulo. It was
introduced in Rome to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. There are
already inumerous testimonies of graces received through her intercession.
